As was mentioned earlier, there are three “heavens.” Only the first two, however, are called, “firmaments.” We find the first “firmament” here in verse 6. Its purpose was to “divide the waters from the waters,”“the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament” (v. 7).
