Darkness can be defined as the absence of light. There is no need to read anything sinister into the narrative as if darkness symbolized evil of some sort. The important role “darkness” played in creating the first 24-hour day will be made evident shortly. “The face of the deep” is one and the same as “the face of the waters”mentioned within the same verse.
