Creation week is now finished. But what exactly was “finished” according to Genesis 2: 1? The answer is supplied: “the heavens and the earth.” The question may be asked: Why is “the heavens” now plural? In Genesis 1: 1 there was but one “heaven” created. But by day two there were two “heavens.” The fact that the author of Genesis uses the plural, “heavens,” in his summation of creation week is further evidence that the first “heaven” is included within the six-days of creation. The word, “thus,” is extremely important. It puts into context everything preceding it. It literally means, “in this manner, or by this means, was the heavens and the earth finished.” Now, it only makes sense that what was now called “finished” had also a “beginning.” No measurement can ever be made without both a beginning and an ending. You cannot have a 12-inch ruler without the first inch! Thisfirst inch, so to speak,is supplied in Genesis 1: 1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
