Once upon a time in an ordinary kindergarten class,
There was a young girl, Elizabeth was her name.
At recess time Ms. Scott, the teacher would
Bring out a big box of toys; it was for all who came
The box contained wooden blocks but also
One great treasure—a beautiful porcelain cat.
Elizabeth always grabbed the cat as quick as a wink,
But one day another child got it just like that.
Elizabeth cried in protest and threw a big tantrum,
But to her surprise Ms. Scott informed her to quit.
“But it’s mine,” she cried louder and louder,
It was no use; Ms. Scott didn’t give in to her snit.
“We have to share, we have to be kind,” Ms. Scott said.
Elizabeth realized at 5 years old that she was a sinner.
She also learned that her teacher was always kind,
Helping her with hated math, making school better.
Ms. Scott’s kind attitude and firm resolve
Taught Elizabeth about God and His better way.
Ms. Scott did not belittle or embarrass her about the cat,
Just encouraged her to be kind to others and fair in play.
Elizabeth didn’t have to muddle through kindergarten
All on her own, she had Ms. Scott, a special teacher.
We have God to walk with us and guide us every day,
So we don’t have to learn life’s lessons alone either.
Elizabeth cried in protest and threw a big tantrum,
But to her surprise Ms. Scott informed her to quit.
“But it’s mine,” she cried louder and louder,
It was no use; Ms. Scott didn’t give in to her snit.
The little girl in kindergarten was Elizabeth Elliot, renown author and teacher, writer of many inspiring books. Poem written by Donna Jones as inspired by Elizabeth’s radio program Encouraging Women on the Bible Broadcasting Network.
I can have pure thoughts when
Christ’s mind is in mine.
Christ in me producesrighteousness.
Simple, but oh so AMAZING!
People were in Christ’s mind
BEFORE the creation and
DURING redemption.
Having the mind of Christ means we will think of people too!
